Perimenopause Treatments

Perimenopause refers to the years leading up to menopause, and it starts as early as the mid-thirties. About 20 percent of women will experience symptoms because of perimenopause, including:

  • Irritability, anxiety and/or depression
  • New or worse PMS
  • New or worse migraines
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Insomnia
  • New or worse period cramps

Closer to the time of menopause, hot flashes, night sweats and irregular periods can occur.

These symptoms occur because of changing levels of estradiol (estrogen) and progesterone. Many women are not aware they are in perimenopause, and many are not sure what the term means. They often believe their symptoms are caused by burn out, stress or depression.

Diagnosing Perimenopause

The diagnosis of perimenopause is made on the basis of the symptoms you are experiencing. Therefore, it is important to work with a healthcare provider who is well-versed in understanding women’s hormones. In some cases, blood tests or other diagnostic tests may be necessary to rule out other causes of your symptoms.

Treating Perimenopause

There are many ways to address the symptoms perimenopause brings, including prescription hormones, dietary phytoestrogens, and herbal medicine. Ensuring that you have enough Vitamin D, and have not developed an iron deficiency are important as well.
